Car Window Tinting Offers a Number of Important Benefits

The practice of window tinting is popular in South Africa and offers a number of significant benefits when installed in a vehicle. The process involves lamination and consists of carefully applying a thin film, usually of a tough polyester material, to the interior surface of the glass. While this may be undertaken using a clear film, the trend in motor vehicles is to install one that is sufficiently coloured to reduce the visible light transmission (VLT) of a pane to something between 25% and 70% of its normal level. The lower the number, the lower the visibility and the legally permitted minimum varies between countries.

Window tinting provides several valuable benefits, but perhaps the most common reason for South Africans to fit this material in their cars today is as a security measure. By reducing visibility, it makes it harder for an inquisitive opportunist to spot any valuables and to decide whether it is worth the risk to attempt a break in. At a robot too, the risk of a successful smash and grab attempt is greatly reduced by the toughened film that continues to hold shattered glass in place and thus to foil the efforts of prying hands that might otherwise be able to grab a handbag or a cellphone.

This additional strengthening provided by the window tinting film also adds the benefit of increased protection in the event of a collision. While the impact may be sufficient to shatter the windscreen, drivers and passenger are protected from glass fragments that, without the additional protection of the film to retain them, could cause serious lacerations to the face and other exposed areas.

As well as improving security, the reduced transmission of sunlight offers drivers and passengers some other valuable benefits. The film used in the window tinting process is a far more effective filter of ultraviolet radiation than untreated glass. When fitting a good quality product owners gain the potential to reduce UV transmission by more than 99%. Prolonged and repeated overexposure to these rays has been proven to cause skin damage, including malignant tumours, and young children are particularly vulnerable.

While the health and safety of the occupants should be seen as the more important advantage of an installation, it can also contribute to the health of your car.  Firstly, those same rays that can damage your skin cause cracking and fading of your car’s interior, while window tinting helps to retain their showroom looks. Other effects include a more stylish appearance and a cooler interior. The latter means less need for aircons use and so improved fuel efficiency is a further benefit of window tinting.
