Benefits of Cruise Control Systems for the Driver

Although cruise control systems have been around for many years, they were previously only reserved for top-end, luxury motor vehicles. However, with modern technology and new automotive innovation, they have become cheaper to produce with the result that car manufacturers are now either fitting them to more affordable models or producing quality after-market units that can be fitted at a later stage.

What are Cruise Control Systems?

Because cruise control systems are now more available, specifically in the after-market arena, it is best to understand what they are and how they work, so that the most can be achieved from this modern piece of ingenuity. Basically, these components allow drivers to maintain a chosen speed for a prolonged period of time over an extended distance without having to make use of the accelerator pedal, much like auto pilot works on a yacht or an aeroplane.

How do They Work?

Even though these units may differ from manufacturer to manufacturer, the basic end-use function is always the same, but it is advisable to consult the specific vehicles’ user manual before one travels to prevent driver distraction whilst on the road.

For activation in most models, you have to reach the required speed that you intend to travel. This speed should not exceed the maximum allowed limit on the road you are travelling on. Once this speed is achieved, an “activate” button would need to be pressed. The vehicle should then, in most models, need to travel a minimum distance before a “set” button needs to be engaged. Once this is done, the vehicle will maintain that speed until it is disengaged. To disengage the unit, the brake pedal needs to be pressed. This will immediately deactivate the device and the driver may once again assume full control.

What do Cruise Control Systems Do for the Driver?

Cruise control systems are most advantageous on long, straight, and predominantly flat stretches of roads and highways. A driver could improve fuel economy by roughly 25% with the added benefit that it extends battery life in both hybrid and electric vehicles.

These devices will assist in attention, concentration, and observation spans and assist in the prevention of driver fatigue. It adds to driver comfort and reduces stress levels. Cruise control systems also avoid costly speeding fines, not only from static speed monitors but, specifically on stretches of roadway that have roving speed cameras as law enforcement tools.
